An endocrinologist is the best. They are the ones who studied this and who are going to be the best ones to know how to help you and regulate your diabetes. Don't wait too long.

I have been treated by both types of doctors, and there are some considerations for each. Before receiving treatment (for diabetes) from an internist, you should probably find the answers to the following questions: 1) How many diabetic patients does the doctor have? 2) What type of diabetics does the doctor treat (Type 1 or Type 2)? Best advice I can give is that if the internist does not have a lot of patients with your type of diabetes, I would pick an endocrinologist.
I have had internists tell me, "I've gone as far as I can with you, it's time to see a specialist." Get referrals from friends, family and even from your own primary care physician.
Hope this helps.

Endocrinologist, always.
They are the ones most well versed in the latest and greatest treatments in diabetes, and have supportive office staff that are critical to a diabetic patient's care.
Usually an endocrinologist's office also has a nutritionist specializing in diabetes, as well as a certified diabetes educator (a special type of nursing accreditation), for example.
Having a doctor or nurse who helps diabetics on a daily basis improve their sugars is better than a doctor who rarely looks at a patient's log sheet. While an Internal Medicine doctor can certainly order and review the correct labs to look at the big picture (a1c, creatinine, etc.), they can not make the kinds of specific recommendations needed to improve your control (increase your basal rate by 0.2 from noon to 4 pm, etc).
I am absolutely appalled an intern would recommend an internal medicine doctor.

An internal medicine doctor will be able to manage a patient with diabetes just fine and without issues. The time for the patient to go to the endocrinologist is when the diabetes gets complicated or cannot be controlled.
In terms of the cost of health care, it's much better for an intermal medicine doctor to manage diabetes than an endocrinologist. It is not as expensive and a patient should be able to see his or her primary care doctor a lot easier than a specialist.

Diabetes calls for an endocrinologist. This is NOT a job for an internist or your GP.
They don't read the very latest on diabetic care and don't know much more than an overview. They don't have the resources that endos do.You need a dietitian- not a list of what not to eat and a diabetes ed class.
Always seek a specialist,an endocrinologist !
