You can't, unless you don't intend to drink it and just want it to fountain all over the room. If you consume the 2 together death is the result due to the chemical reaction. In the closed space of the stomach, it could rupture your stomach and you would die.

If you are putting them in a 2 liter bottle, chew the mentos a little, and stick them to the cap. Put the cap back on, and shake it until the mentos fall into the soda. When you open it, BOOM. For best results use Diet Coke, not any other brand.

Take two peices of paper. The first one roll up into a tube like the man in this picture is doing:http://www.cityofsound.com/photos/centre_poin/telescope.jpg
Tape it so it stays and put it aside for now.
Next open the bottle of soda and place the second paper right on top. Now put that rolled up peice of paper on top of the second paper and put the mentos inside the rolled up paper. Line it up with the top of the bottle. Then as far back as you can pull the second peice of so that the mentos will go in.It should be the safest way.Good Luck!
easier way:Take an empty coin roll and a peice of paper but the peice of paper on the top of the bottle then put the coin roll on top of the paper directly under the top of the bottle. Fill the coin rool with mentos pull the paper away and BOOM/!

Why would you want to do it safely? The whole point is to make the soda explode (unless you just like to have mentos in your soda, which is a bit odd).

You cant! Dont you watch "Mythbusters"? They did a show where they put mentos in soda to see how much it would explode. Pretty cool actually.

Mythbusters used magnets on on the inside and one on the outside top of the bottle attach a string back away and pull the string to release the magnets the mento sittin on top of the magnet will fall as well and cause your explosion!!!!!

stick 'em in a tube with a hard piece of cardboard on the bottom, line up the tube over the top of the bottle...then pull the cardboard away and run. It just spouts like a water fountain, nothing too exciting or dangerous.
(PS, must be diet coke, not just any soda)
