As a vegetarian you have an option (unlike vegans) so it really comes down to a personal preference.

I also don't believe that there are hard & inflexible rules when it comes to being a vegetarian.. You should just do what feels rite for you......

And I would think it disrespectful if someone knew my dietary preferences & they knowingly fed me food the contravened my beliefs....

PS - I'm not a vegetarian

**collins 17 ... thanks for your comment, however, tell me, who sets the rules for vegetarians?? it isn't like being part of a religious cult, its a PERSONAL CHOICE, therefore open to the individuals interpretation & discretion, not yours or mine....

Chicken & beef broth are not vegetarian. Therefore vegetarians don't consume them. If you knowingly do, that's fine, but you aren't vegetarian. Actual vegetarians would prefer people who do not to use the label. That's what gets us served chicken and beef and fish, people who misuse the labels.

Yes, it's rude to cook something with chicken/beef broth and not tell the vegetarian, as long as they know you're vegetarian and purposely hide it. Otherwise, it's up to you to ask. Some omnis don't purposely do it to be rude, they just don't think about it.

It depends on what type of vegetarian you plan on being. Some vegetarians don't eat meat, but consume dairy and/or eggs. Some don't consume anything that may come from a animal like gelatin ( make from boiling pig skin and some part of a animal bone) ,some sugars(whiten with animals bone),etc That is a vegan vegetarian. Oh Some won't eat meat, eggs, or dairy but will eat fish and some other types of sea food.

It would be nice to completely divulge all the information regarding the dishes you are serving. I do know some vegetarians and vegans would are unable to digest animal proteins, and would get sick.

However, if you are hosting an event, any reasonable vegetarian wouldn't go, "I can't eat that." They would respectively decline, and maybe eat something else from the table.

If you are hosting a vegetarian for dinner, either make a vegetarian friendly main dish, or make a side dish and ask them to bring a main dish. Most vegetarians would love to bring their own food because they know what went into it and they are interested in sharing their best recipes.

For those who are vegetarian for animal welfare reasons, consuming the broth of meat or other foods cooked in it is absolutely contrary to the entire point of being vegetarian! I realize that there are some vegetarians who adopt the lifestyle for health reasons and not for animal welfare reasons and would thus be less sensitive to eating a food that has animal products in it (their diet is generally focused on avoiding meat and animal fat specifically).

Those who are veg. for animal rights reasons avoid foods that involve the death of the animal, plain and simple. Anyone who says otherwise is not fully committed to the cause. I don't want to sound pretentious, but I think any conscientous vegetarian would not consume foods cooked in animal broth or with animal fats, eat foods that contain gelatin (a by-product of the boiling of bones and ligaments) or purchase and wear leather. The animal must die for humans to access these products, and I can't see how someone committed to the animal welfare cause would pick and choose which death-created products they will consume or purchase.

II know it's difficult to be 'perfect' and know of and avoid all meat and by-products. I'm a vegan who is constantly finding new things that I eat that contain some type of animal by-product. I do my best. I commend you for being vegetarian and doing your best to be educated and live a conscientous lifestyle.

Oh yeah, and it is VERY rude and inescusable to sneak animal products into a vegetarian's food!

Yes its rude

Vegans and vegetarians should not be eating chicken or beef broth

Mark G : vegetarians do not eat meat, so why would it be okay to eat water that had a piece of chicken boiling in it?

Ohh and there are hard & inflexible rules to being a vegitarian
One of them is vegitarians do not eat meat

Yes, it’s a personal choice but you can’t call yourself vegetarian and eat meat. Look up the definition of vegetarian it will tell you no meat. Some people consider themselves vegetarian and still eat fish, they are not vegetarian does not matter that they don’t consider fish a meat

Check any vegetarian website or organization and you will see what a vegetarian is.

I'm a vegetarian, and I wouldn't eat something cooked in chicken broth. I find that my body is so unused to meat products that it makes me sick.
I would DEFINATELY want to know if something had been cooked in meat broth, and i would think it was very rude for someone not to tell me if they knew my eating habits. But I know sometimes people just dont think about it, they just do what they are used to. if someone did that to you recently, try not to get upset about it. i am sure they are not trying to be rude, they just dont understand all the details.

Something cooked in meat broth is not suitable for a vegetarian. Many meat eaters wouldn't even stop to consider something like that, though, so it may not be rudeness at work exactly, just ignorance.

I am a vegetarian and I have been for many years also. At many times, whenever I have been invited to fuinctions or parties, I do make it a point to inform my host that I am a vegatarian. They do appreciate it and then start checking with others who are vegetarians also. If my host is not able to cater for vegetarian dishes, no sweat. I will eat up the fruits or salads.... I tell the host, THESE ARE MINE....heh heh heh. Never make the host look bad. No big deal. Either go back home and have my meal there or I eat before I go. If your host is good enough to call you, and if he is not able to cater for vegetarian food, be nice to him.

Well, considering the fact that chicken/beef broth is still a product that animals were killed to make, I would have to say yes, it is a no-no. And it is extremely rude to give a veggie something with animal products in it without telling them! It's just mean!

Yes, if you eat anything cooked in chicken or beef broth, you're not a vegetarian.....unless someone sneaks it in on you intentionally not telling you. It is very rude if someone does that.
