He takes Valtrex everyday and has never passed it on. His doctor told him the chances were very slim if he took valtrex everyday and in six years has only had one breakout.

What are the chances of him passing it to me if he is taking valtrex and there is no breakout.... I dont want to use condoms forever!

There really is no way to put a number on that, like a 25% chance, or a 40% chance. There is just no way to know. If you are going to have sex with him, there will ALWAYS be a chance you can contract the virus from him, even if condoms are used.

Condoms are not 100% effective in preventing the spread of STDs, especially STDs that can be contracted by DIRECT skin to skin contact like genital herpes and HPV. Since the condom only covers a man's penis and not his entire genital area, just the rubbing back of the genital skin during foreplay or sex is enough to spread the virus.

There are things you can do to HELP prevent spreading the virus. Always using condoms can HELP, him being on antiviral medication can HELP, and not having sex or doing anything sexual if he is on an outbreak can HELP. But, since herpes can be spread when a person is on an outbreak or not, there is always going to be that chance that you can contract the virus.

I have personally had genital herpes (as well as HPV) for 7 years. I was in one relationship with a man for nearly 4 years and he never contracted the virus from me. I had several outbreaks during those 4 years, but he still never got it from me. But, my current fiance (boyfriend at the time) contracted the virus from me within a month of us having sex. I hadn't had an outbreak for over a year at that time and he still contracted the virus from me!

There are several couples out there who has been lucky and haven't spread it (like my 4 year relationship). One person has the virus and the other doesn't.

You just need to be aware that you can take all the precautions you want, but there will always be a chance (whether big or small) that you could contract the virus.

Good luck to you!

The likelihood of passing genital herpes to a partner is highest during an outbreak (times when a sore is present). When a person is not experiencing an outbreak, there is a 4-10% chance of transmitting it. (Depending mostly on genders.)
Condoms help prevent the spread of herpes, cutting down the rate of transmission by about 50%. Condoms are not totally effective, though, because genital herpes only require skin-to-skin contact to spread, so the areas that the condom does not cover are still susceptible. Some people get herpes even though they’ve always used condoms! Nonetheless, using a condom is a great idea and reducing the chancing by half is nothing to sneeze at. For example, if you’re a man and you’re not having an outbreak, you would have an 8% chance of giving it to your partner. But using a condom, you’d bring that number down to 4%. (Add in antivirals, and you’ve brought it down to 2%).
Suppressive therapy is the use of prescription Valtrex on a daily basis, whether an outbreak is present or not. Whereas Valtrex is commonly used to stop an outbreak as it is happening, it can also be used daily to prevent outbreaks to begin with. Valtrex is an antiviral medication that reduces the occurrence of herpes outbreaks. Using Valtrex daily also reduces the time and likelihood of the virus to “shed”, i.e. be contagious. Studies show that it can reduce the viral shedding periods so much that transmission rates drop by 50%.

70% of herpes infections are passed on when there are no symptoms. People who are infected with herpes have what they call viral shedding, meaning that the virus is active but is not causing any symptoms... meaning, that during this period he will not be aware that he is having an outbreak and he can pass the virus on to you. Please use a condom.

You will always have to use a condom unless you want to be infected with what he has and then you can have unprotected sex did he have it when you got together or while you were togther? Where a condom it's the safest way but you can always ask the doctor whta the risk is they will tell you they know best.
