For the last five days or so I've been coughing and constantly having to spit every so often. Over the last two days whenever I lie down to go to sleep I start coughing and having to spit uncontrollably every few minutes, which keeps me awake. In the morning I usually end up coughing out thick green mucus.

I went to see a doctor who said it was a virus infection and recommended Diamatap to stop the coughing, but I don't like to take medicine unless I really have to so that my body doesn't build resistance to the medicine for the future.

Is there anything else I can do to help me not cough at night. How long do you think it'll take to get better? With the exception of the coughing and spitting I feel fine everywhere else.

Although in my waking hours I don't have the urge to cough as much, maybe once every 30 minutes or so.

I had asked the doctor whether I needed an anti-biotic, he said no.

Green mucus = infection. You need an antibiotic. I wouldn't take Dimetapp, I'd take Robitussin DM--and you can get them in liquigel. You HAVE to take these every night before bed if you want the cough to stop. You also might ask your dr. for an inhaler. An albuterol inhaler is the best way I've found to stop a coughing attack in the middle of the night.

If this continues, you need to go see a pulmonologist. They will get to the bottom of this and make you feel better.

My son had terrible, terrible asthma and ear infections out the wazoo. His dr., Barry Paull, tested him for allergies (there were a few) and we made appropriate changes at home, then he gave him one medication for swelling in the bronchial tubes, and one for calming the irritation in the lungs. Then he gave him a rescue inhaler and a preventative to take every day. Dr. Paull changed our lives from surrounding my son's allergies 24/7 to leading a normal life again.

Take care and feel better.

Do not sleep flat. Add pillows so that your head is raised and you will not cough as much. It took me about 2 weeks to get rid of it also without medication.

I have the same thing you do. And I am still hesitating to go to the doc because they arent going to give me anything to make it go away. They rarely give out antibiotics anymore. I wasnt sleeping either so I tried Mucinex DM over the counter and I slept after the first pill.
