It all depends on the item and how long after. But if it looks or smells funny, there is a chance that the food has accumulated additional bacteria, which is what is harmful about things past the shelf life. A few extra bacteria is not bad, but when it gets too old, it is potentially dangerous.
So, use common sense when you use something past the shelf life.

Usually it is still fresh a few days to a week after the sell-by-date, because that was just the sell-by-date. If it just says "Exp. date", then it usually is not fresh after that date. With bread and milk, you can usually tell by the smell. With some things, you can tell by the appearance of mold. When in doubt, throw it out.

Well, it isn't 'fresh' by any stretch of the imagination. But the sell by date is the date where the store sends it back if it hasn't sold. It doesn't suddenly go bad just because of the date on the calendar. It's probably okay to use.

Maybe, the sell by date is when it has to be sold, to give the consumer time to eat it, however; I personally don't, after the sell date you are kind of pushing your luck.

Sell-by date is not the same as consume-by date. It really depends on the item (dairy, meat, veg, etc.)

I surely have had the best comparable subject ensue after itemizing quite a few products. I had to pass to the library on a daily basis to verify no one had emailed me any questions. Alot of coffee shops and bookstores have "loose" desktops additionally. Plan forward.

it will still be good a few days after the date, especially if it had never been opened or had the seal broken on it.
