If your friend buys the store brand of soy milk, it will probably be fairly inexpensive. She should look for vegan items, as that will ensure she's not eating lactose-containing foods.

If she likes yogurt, there are a few brands of soy yogurt out there that are fairly inexpensive.

She can get Whole Foods-brand or Trader Joe's-brand tofu very inexpensively.

Tofutti is a company geared toward the lactose intolerant, and many of their products are accidentally vegan.

Beans and rice are awesome! THere are endless kinds of beans and several types of rice. Also seasons and toppings are endless. You don't need cheese to make it good.
(Also try lentils!)

Also soy milk is really good once you get used to it. I love it a lot and I cannot stand the taste of regular cow milk.

There is this interesting stuff in the store that they call "field roast" and it is like a substitute for deli meats for sandwiches but is soybased. Kind of expensive becasue everything like that is, but it is in the health food area over with the tofu and such.

Beans, nuts, seeds, grains, wholewheat bread, wholewheat pasta, tofu, noodles. She can bake anything she wants... there's a replacement for everything now so just replace milk with soy, rice or almond milk. There are also some great dairy free chocolates on the market.
