My sister has been vegan for 6 months and she will be coming down this thanksgiving. I need to prepare vegan friendly dishes for her, Ive found some dessert recipes, and am wondering if a non dairy whipped cream for pie and toffutti ice creams can be bought?

What about cream cheese? I heard there is vegan cream cheese, but hows that taste?

Ok so, whipped cream? and cream cheese?

Many "nondairy" items have casein, a milk protein, so do read labels. Cool Whip, unfortunately, is one of them. Many soy cheeses also have casein as well. Follow Your Heart by Vegan Gourmet is a fairly decent vegan cheese, but it's best used in recipes, not eaten plain.

But there's a spray-can whipped cream called Soyatoo, and that is vegan. It comes in a red can about the size of any spray whipped cream. If your local natural foods store or Whole Foods doesn't carry it, you can order it from either www.veganessentials.com or www.veganstore.com. Or you can make it yourself with this really easy recipe: you take one container of silken tofu (the kind in the aseptic box), 2-4 tbsp of sugar, 2 tsp of vanilla extract, and 2 tsp cornstarch (arrowroot starch also works), blend well, and chill for at least an hour. I got that recipe from "How it All Vegan!" by Sarah Kramer and Tanya Barnard.

Tofutti is geared toward the lactose-intolerant, but many of their items are accidentally vegan. I've only used their Better Than Cream Cheese in recipes, so I can't really tell you how it tastes.

A better choice for vegan ice creams is Purely Decadent by Turtle Island (they also make So Delicious and Soy Delicious) or Temptation.

Hope this helps!
