Personally, I get quite annoyed about the commericals about the guy who said going on insulin was the hardest decision. Honestly, I didn't have a choice! I was just wondering if any other type 1 diabetics get annoyed by all those type 2's? If so, how to you deal with it? Are you also tired of explaining the difference?

I don't get as much annoyed as I get amazed that some Type 2's are ignorant and don't learn about both types. I've been Type 1 (then called "Juvenile diabetes) for 40 years and was taught something about Type 2 (then called "Adult Onset") when I was diagnosed, just so I would know the difference between the two!

When I try to explain the difference to a Type 2, depending on their age and intelligence (or interest ), some just don't "get" it anyway.

And, the later in life a person gets it, generally the more terrified they seem to be of taking insulin injections (fear of needles?) while Type I's either deal with it or they die..soon!

Turn your annoyance to compassion because rarely does a Type 2 truly understand what a Type I has to deal with...often for many years longer than Type 2's.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the insulin producing cells of the pancreas are destroyed by the immune system. There is an absolute deficiency of insulin and they must take insulin for the rest of their lives. Type 2 diabetes is more an 'insufficiency' of insulin. It is not thought to be immune-system related but more related to increased body weight reducing cellular sensitivity to insulin. It can usually be managed via weight loss, low-sugar diet and/or tablets. However, it can progress to the point where the person needs insulin as well.

i dont think i've ever seen those commercials. i dont get annoyed by type 2's and honestly ive never had to explain the difference between type 1 and type 2 in my almost 4 years of being type 1 (whoohoo! 4 year anniversity is Nov. 28th....I'm gonna go eat some cake to celebrate! lol) cause not many people know im diabetc.....except all the relatives, and they never ask me what the difference is, so i dont bother explaining!

what i am annoyed with is the media. a lot of people get their information from watching (news stations) or reading (newspapers, magazines etc) what the media says. when talking about diabetes, the media hardly ever mentions which type they're talking about....they just say "diabetes". any type 1 can figure out that they're usually talking about type 2. because of that, nondiabetics (except the people that maybe live with a type 1) and maybe some type 2's know very little about type 1 or dont even know there's 2 types (3 counting gestational). because of all this, type 1's get all the annoying ignorant questions! type 1 needs more media coverage!

Personally as a Type 2 who had to go on MDI early in the game I don't see the problem with either you or the commercial.

I think the commercials for diabetic services and meds are without a doubt in very poor taste!! Maybe the worst on the media!!

Why bother to explain the difference?? The dummies are goin to toss your explainations out the window anyway!!!

Hey I dont understand the fuss. It is bad manners to degrade a person with Type 1 diabetes. Being type 2 I should be thankful rather than making fun of type. Oh Lord has saved us. Well i obviously sympathise with Type one. But hope is nearby with a inhaler type of treatment, this obviously is gr8 news so say thums up. Be cheerful. This is a motivational pep talk from Type 2.

I don't watch TV, so I don't have that problem. I understand what you're saying, though. Big pharmas are not doing society a favor by advertising their products.

I read with interest Autumn's reply... she's somewhat correct, but getting annoyed at other people's ignorance is a waste of energy. Educating them patiently, but persistently, is the way to go. And if you can't educate them, simply move on.

I think both of you could benefit tremendously by channeling your awareness in the direction of Allie Beatty. She's doing more for type 1 education than you could ever imagine. Check her out: http://www.allisonlovebeatty.com/
