Need Rice!?

Question

What is the best brand of Japanese/Korean shortgrain rice that works well for sushi? Okay..I do know that Nishiki is one of if not the best but it's so expensive. Any other ones out there that are very good and not so expensive? We buy a lot!

Just look for a short grain or medium grain rice. In fact, Nishiki is a medium grain rice.

Another rice type is Cal-Rose, but I've seen packages that use a rose as a logo. Brand names include Calrose and Botan are some common alternates to Nishiki.

In regards to going to the expensive stuff versus the less expensive stuff, it really doesn't make that much of a difference (you won't be able to taste the difference between the expensive stuff versus the less expensive stuff). Just make sure the rice you buy is not cheap because it's mainly leftover broken grains of rice. You want whole grains of rice. That's the main difference between cheap stuff and expensive stuff.

Expensive is a relative term. When talking about rice, 2-3 times more for one brand over another is still only a few dollars. You're going to be spending a fortune on sushi grade tuna or other sushi grade fish, do yourself a favor and get good rice.

I really don't give a hoot what answers you want to hear. If you want to spend $25 on a 1/2 lb of sushi grade tuna and mix it in with cheapo rice then go ahead. In fact, why don't you go pick up a 10 pack of ramen noodles instead. Sounds more your speed.

Sticky rice is what they use for sushi and typically you can find it in the International food section of your local grocer! I love sushi too:)

Try jasmine rice, it is not from Japan or Korea, but from Thailand, good alternative for sushi with reasonable price.
