Not if they are well controlled... Generally those who are well controlled have fewer diabetes -related issues and are just as active and able as anyone who does not have diabetes.

Only one time for me in the last 12 years. That was 5 years ago when I got pneumonia. A domino effect ensued and I also ended up with DKA, hypokalemia (low potassium) and atrial fibrillation (a serious heart problem). I spent nearly 2 weeks in the hospital, a week of that in ICU.
It took me about a month to recover so yes, I had to take a leave of absence. No problem there. They knew how sick I was. They also knew that I was normally in good control but that the pneumonia had gotten the best of me.
That is the only time I had to take a leave because of diabetes.

It does not always mean that a diabetic has to take time off. I have been t-1 for 48 years now. A diabetic taking care of themself means good sugars, eating in moderation, exercising. If the blood sugar is running high all the time, he/she will be sick anyway. If not taken care of it would mean a short time off getting back in control.

No! It depends how proactive you are in taking care of yourself. The most important thing for a person to do who is diabetic is to check and recheck your blood sugar.
Know where your number is at all times. Take inventory as to what trigger highs and lows blood sugar. It could be stress, it could be foods, and it could be the medication that prescribed to you may need adjusting or perhaps changed.
People who are diabetic can live a long and healthy life, but it requires discipline to do the things that need to be done to take good care of yourself and in managing your blood sugar.
It's a battle, but the battle can be won.

In 30 years of work the only time I needed time off was when I was hospitalized for pneumonia, and for regular doctors appointments. I use less sick days than the average person at my workplace.
