Vegetarians do not eat fish. And the reason some of us might get our "panties in a wad" when someone who eats fish calls himself/herself a vegetarian is people who really ARE vegetarians don't want someone saying, oh, you're vegetarian, we made some fish for you.
Vegetarians do NOT eat the flesh of animals. There is no wiggle room as far as that is concerned.

As you can see some people are a bit touchy about that and they tend to foam at the mouth and get their panties in quite a twist over it each time it is mentioned.
If you plan on being vegetarian, then I'm afraid seafood is off the menu too. Yes it's "real" meat (even shrimp).
But you can still eat eggs and dairy if you choose.
And don't panic, there's still lots to eat: go to http://www.vegweb.com for recipes and read the beginner's guide at http://www.veggie123.com

You cannot eat fish and be a vegetarian.
A vegetarian does not eat meat, fish, poultry nor slaughter byproducts
Stick to that, and you'll be fine
Joanne is wrong. No doubt the "research" is web-based. You will not find any real dictionary or established vegetarian society that defines a range of xyz-vegetarian's. They are all modern corruptions of the word that vegetarians hate because it devalues our efforts.
http://www.vegsoc.org/fish
And a pescitarian is not a "vegetarian who eats fish". They are a meat-eater that excludes red meat and poulty.
Eat what you want, its entirely up to you, but please if you plan on having any fishy expereinces then keep away from the word vegetarian ( or any mods of it )

Of course fish is meat, it is a dead animal!
You wouldn't be a vegetarian if you ate fish...
You would be a pectatarian (or something like that)
That is a vegetarian who eats fish.

No, vegetarians dont eat flesh of any kind. Of course you can choose to eat fish but dont call yourself a vegetarian as it leads to the sort of confusion that real vegetarians resent - like when the 'veggie' option in restaurants is tuna!

There are various categories for vegetarians. A "True" vegetarian is a Vegan, who eats no meat, fish, eggs or dairy products of any kind or products that contain them. There is a Pesco vegetarian who does eat fish. There is an Ovo-Lacto vegetarian who eats eggs and dairy products. There are also ethnic diets which are vegetarian. I have been an Ovo-Lacto vegetarian for many years but only rarely indulge in dairy products. So, you can eat your fish and be a Pesco vegetarian.

Technically, no.
However, unless you are all hung up on being able to say "I'm a vegetarian", eat what seems appropriate to you.
How to explain to others? Say "I don't eat meat or poultry."
