Tightening of the upper esophageal sphincter (the muscles at the top of your esophagus where it meets the lower throat) can be due to 2 things;
One is GERD. The muscles tighten in order to prevent the acid in the reflux from reaching your airway.
Two is anxiety. All muscles in the body will become tense; so will the throat muscles.
It will feel as if a person has something stuck in the throat, and swallowing of solids (meat, bread, etc.; basically anything which isn't chewed to a puree consistency) becomes uncomfortable and sometimes difficult.
Your best bet is to have your doctor check for reflux as well as anxiety. Once treated, the swallowing difficulty is likely to go away.
Ibuprofen worked for the other answerer as a placebo, that's all.

Finding It Hard To Swallow

Does it really hurt to swallow too?

I had something like that a few years ago. The doctor checked and didn't see anything wrong with my throat, did a strep test that came back negative. I was insistent that she give me something for it because I was having trouble eating, drinking, sleeping, etc. She ended up giving me a prescription for 800 mg ibprofen. I'm not a doctor but I think the problem was inflammation of some kind and the ibprofen helped ease it. The issue went away within a week or so after I started taking the ibprofen.

Good luck! Hope you find some relief soon.

I also have a hard time swallowing pills and I think that i get a kind of anxiaty about it. I tend to think about the size of the pill and the shape too much and my throat tightens, so when I take pills i dont think about it i just get a big glass of water and take one at a time drop the pill on the back of my tounge and guzzle the water as if I am really thirsty and swallow hard so the pill is sure to go down, also i know people who take their pills with food some crush them up and put them in a table spoon of water but if you do it that way i suggest have extra water to chase it with.

my son had this for about 6 months (he is 16) and it drove him crazy. he was always clearing his throat! he had so many tests done and nothing was found. he also lost a lot of weight as well, but he is now doing great!! the doctors said it probably caused by stress....good luck!
