Check the microsoft web site. They have a convertor available to allow earlier versions of Office to open 2007 files. However an features unique to 2007 may be lost in the converted file.
In the future, when using 2007, when you are saving it, under the filename box is a file type drop down list. There is an option in there to save the file in 2003 format.

office 2007 can save files both in the new format (.docx) and the 97-2003 old format (.doc). either open the word file with 2007 and save it with .doc or try http://www.docx2doc.com/ which is fast and free.

Download the Office Compatibility Pack from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en
This is free, and will allow you to open Office 2007 files with your Office 2003.

Hmmm. This could be a toughie. I don't think there is a way to open this file without using Office 2007. MAYBE you could open it with openoffice, but of course you'd have to download it from openoffice.org and I can't guarantee it would work.
Sorry, but I really think you are out of luck. Last resort, try to open it with Wordpad just to see if you can at least get the main part of the text.

I had exactly the same problem!
you have to save it in word 07 as a word 03 file.
go: save as>97-03
the file extension for word 07 is: .docx
the file extension for word 03 is: .doc
