If you are going to college, major in economics. Most people who hire researchers want to know about economic viability in a particular field. I work with a research company on a regular basis and have worked with some big name companies like Kellogg and Starbucks. They want research about how successful a project would be if they opened it, and a background in economics will give you credibility.
If you want to skip all that, or already have a college degree, you being looking for "RFP's" (Requests for Proposals). RFPDB.com is a database where people submit requests for proposals for research projects. You could submit your proposals and get jobs that way.
Also, join some trade associations and some networking groups. You will also want to get MapPoint 2006, which will help you download demographics instantly and make many of your research projects more detailed.
Hope this helps and good luck.
