There was no sudden altering of God from the wrathful judge to loving father- the only thing that changed was common perception. In the OT, culture was far more violent than the culture in the NT, and God dealt with people in the customs of their time. God had the earth swallow up certain people because such was the expected punishment at the time. Additionaly, the writers of the OT and NT differed. The OT writers were mostly Jews with traditional veiws, while the NT writers were Jews with Greek education and thinking. They provide two different perspectives on the same God.

Old Testament
Jonah 4:2---He prayed to the LORD, "O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity".
Deuteronomy 4:31---For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath.
2 Samuel 24:14--- David said to Gad, "I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men."
Psalms 86:5---You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you.

New Testament
Mathew 11:23----And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell; for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
Luke 16:23--- And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Revelation 20:13-15---- And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

I think your views about God in the Old and New Testament are not based on reality.

Ask the person who wrote the bible
the bible was written by some guy
till we prove that guy was right we can start asking questions about god.
For the time being it's all assumption, continue your research ;it's still an open question

GAL 2:14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
