Bible? That's about like a person saying they aren't Russian but then pick apart all Russians. Or saying they can't speak, and have seldom tried to read French, but then they cut down the French language. How much sense does that make? I like the ones that say they are former Christians but are now Atheist. Right! Kind of shows that your faith wasn't very strong. Which Christian religion were you and what fault did you find? What did they FORCE on you? Is it the part where Jesus died to offer you salvation? Did you feel that the 10 commandments are in error? Most Atheist say they don't go to church and don't read the Bible plus they degrade radio and TV ministers. How do you know anything about Christianity, the Bible, and ministers, if you never attend, read. or listen to any of them? Have you heard of Billy Graham? If so, what is he doing that you find detestable? What has he done that is bad for mankind? If you are NON-religious how is it that you know so very much about it

It is amazing how the self professed superior intellect doesn't allow them to believe, yet it apparently allowed them to obsess over the thing they claim they are too intelligent to believe in.

Woo hooo. 8 thumbs down.

Last time I answered a question like this you atheist's got me into double digits...don't stop now.

Well I am a former Christian, an ex Seventh Day Adventist to be exact.

I have attended private Christian schools with classes that focus on the Bible.

Not to forget I have read the Bible from front to back on my own before I even reached junior high school.

You see I have done much study on the Bible, and think it is funny how I am told that I am taking it out of context.

you know what? I really don't care to read it again. I'd rather read the Havamal, in English I don't know Icelandic.

Many atheists have a fair amount of religious training and were previously indoctrinated into Christianity. They have read the bible. Many say that is why they are atheists.

Billy Graham has made himself and his family incredibly rich, and is the original founder of the mega-church. You tell me what good he has done. He sure as hell has riped off thousands of people of millions of dollars.
Now there is the new scandal with Oral Roberts U. The man that said god told him he must raise $6,000,000.

I could go on will all the scandals with the mega-preachers, but they are too numerous to count.

You are just kidding yourself if you think most atheist know nothing of Christianity. That is why I am not just an atheist, but an anti-theist too.

Many people make the rational decision to leave a religion after making the desperate search for some logic. Many pray that they will find something...one line in some divinely inspired text that will put the veil back in front of their eyes and leave them at peace. When they have finished the search and find nothing, they leave.

So they know because they realized it was a choice and decided to weigh their options and make it, while most people just go on believing what their parents told was the truth without looking into what exactly that truth is.

I was a christian and went to church three times a week and had a "bible a day" book I kept next to my bed, I have belived and my belief in God lasted a lot longer than my belief in Christians. But over time I found I could no longer stand the hypocrites that made up the church I went to (An evangelist Baptist Church) so I changed Churches (To an Anglican church) same hypocrites so I tried a Catholic Church which was even worse, eventually I had to realise that although I may have still belived in God I have a hard time beliving in christians these days - and for proof I give you YOUR QUESTION, don't judge me for leaving the faith judge yourself for pushing me away!

Atheism does not equate to ignorance. I am an atheist because I have looked at others life philosophies and found most lacking in logic and reason and their attempts to force dogma over understanding are sad. I would not talk about politics if I did not know enough about it, just as I would not dispute religion if I did not know a lot about it. You assume that studying the French language would result in me criticising it - but of course you know you are wrong. Critical thinking does not mean we criticise everything, is it ignorance that made you say thay or simply pushing lies like religion teaches you to, to score a point with those who do not think very deeply.

Blind faith to me is not a positive thing to claim to base one's life on. Empathy and reason are far more valid rocks to base ones foundation on. A mythical figure dying does not affect me in any way. It could not more absolve another person from their actions than if you killed yourself because a friend sinned, it is preposterous and insulting to any intelligent human for this to be acceptable.

Your premise is contradictory. You insult us for knowing so much about religion ( I know more than most religious people I know) and then you insult us for not knowing more about it. You cannot keep your cake and eat it to.

The fact that I know a lot about politics does not make me want to become a politician,...

This atheist was raised in a religious tradition, attended a parochial school, and went to church and Sunday school growing up. I've read the Bible a fair number of times, I've certainly prayed and fasted.

That said, I'd guess that I probably know the Bible at least as well as the average believer.

My sisters and I all graduated from a christian school. At a very young age, one of my sisters said she didn't believe in God and when she was old enough she wasn't going to go to church. And 30 yrs later she still hasn't gone to church except for weddings and funerals.

So, even tho she's an athiest, she has considerable knowledge about the bible, 10 commandments & God.

But I'll say one thing on her behalf -- she has never said anything to anyone about their beliefs. She was also raised with manners.

My parents are Greek Orthodox I got dragged along to church .They tried as best as they could to make me a good Christian but no matter how much they tried, I asked a lot of forbidden questions and got no answers just people angry saying"its a sin to ask such things, who told you to ask these things!" Well I cant help myself i need proof to believe something! After getting married I was 100% convinced there is no God. I don't go to church unless I'm invited to a wedding or christening. The only religious stuff I know is from the movies. Those Greek & Catholic priests look like pimps with all their "bling bling "crosses, that's what all priest of all denominations do, pimp Jesus! Yeah who's more rich the Catholic church or Gr.Orthodox ect...

So, let me get this straight.

If we used to be Christians (a category I fall into), then we can't possibly know enough about Christianity to argue against it because our faith wasn't strong enough for us to still be Christians today, but if we've never been Christian then we can't possibly know enough about Christianity because we haven't experienced what it's like to be a Christian?

Basically, you're saying that the only people capable of criticizing Christianity are Christians. Of course, their faith must not be very great if they dare question the Holy Book, so those people don't count. People of other religions are right out. Who's left? Who can criticize you?

Hmm, well I attended Sunday school almost every sunday from age 5 to 14 and then went to weekly Bible classes when I was still Christian. So I think I know a fair bit about Christian theology and the Bible. As for Jesus dying for my salvation it is possible that this story was adapted from the many existing and pre-existing mythologies prior to Christianity. It is possible it is a mythological tale. There is little evidence and a lot of incredibly contradictory to reality as we see it claims. I personally decided that a religion based on a God that created imperfect beings then required blood sacrifice to forgive imperfections followed by requiring the death of its son sounded a bit primitive to me. I'm fine though if it rings true and works for you. As for Jesus's sacrifice, what again was it? He died to become an immortal God like being to reside in heaven and be worshipped by humans who if they did refuse to worship him would be thrown in a pit of fire. The length of time he suffered would be little less than the blink of an eye to an immortal. As for the 10 commandments the first four are just related to God saying how jealous he is and demands our worship and obedience. Again if its your religion then fine but I don't think its applicable to post something all over shared public spaces that is basically about how you can't have other beliefs or you are damned to hell. How about Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, agnostics, atheists, etc.... They all have their own beliefs, should they be able to post them up in public if they deny and belittle your own beliefs. Beliefs like religion are personal and unprovable. They should exist in places of common worship and individual's private lives. When religion wants to impose itself elsewhere is the only time I have an issue.
