Vasovagal syncope: Syncope means fainting. Vasovagal refers to the cardiovascular (vaso) and neurologic (vagal) mechanisms involved in response to an unpleasant stimulus. The parasympathetic nervous system (vagal) is activated and lowers the heart rate which can drop the blood pressure enough to result in loss of consciousness. Also dilation of the vascular system (blood vessels) causes a drop in blood pressure without the usual increase in heart rate that is found when large blood vessels usually dilate (like when you get hot). It is often a combination of these 2 factors that causes the fainting.

In summary, your blood pressure and heart rate fall resulting in decrease blood flow to the brain and loss of consciousness. Usually when you lie down, blood starts flowing back to the brain, and you regain consciousness.

If this is a known problem, lying down with legs elevated to have blood drawn will help prevent it.
