There are many harmful cleansers, but some are OK. You have heard about vinegar and grapefruit seed extract.
You can find cleansers that are safe for birds at DrsFosterSmith.com under cage cleaning supplies.
good luck

You can still use cleaning supplies. Just try to avoid using a lot of aerosols in their space -- they really aren't good for anyone to breathe... also birds have a different type respiratory system (you may want to do a yahoo search on BIRD RESPIRATORY SYSTEM for more information).
If you are cleaning the bathroom and have to use harsh products, simply close the door...
You can use dusting products, such as pledge. If you are worried, then spray the cloth in another room, before dusting in their space... It's also ok to use window cleaners... just don't spray them at the bird (of course, i KNOW you have more sense than this).
The one thing which is very harmful is any type of insect repellent or spray, so if you have to spray, remove them from that area and put them into a room with the door shut and maybe a towel at the bottom. Once the spray has settled for a few hours, it should be safe to return the birds.
You can't stop your life if you have a pet, and i'm sure you want to keep your home clean. There are also natural products you can make yourself and you could do a search for HOME MADE CLEANING PRODUCTS .... or something similar. Lots of people clean with vinegar etc. for me, i like the convenience and ease of store bought products.

At one time, my house had 28 birds in it so it can be tricky cleaning without harming them. If they are in standing cages or ones that can be picked up, just move them outside on the patio or deck until you have finished cleaning (with normal supplies) and when you are finished, just let your house air out for maybe 20 to 30 minutes and bring them back in. Or you can cover them with a sheet and do your cleaning and again air your house out for a while before taking the sheet off. They will be fine as long as they dont get sprayed with any chemicals. My birds definitely hate the vacuum cleaner though! They compete to see who can be louder than the vacuum. Usually the cockatiels win. Good luck!!!

I highly recommend using GSE (grapefruit seed extract) and water. Not only do I use it on my birds' cages, I use it to clean other things in the house. It's completely natural and is also antibiotic, antifungal and antimicrobial. It's completely safe for birds (even to place the right amount in their drinking water if they need it) and does an equal job to poop off on getting dried poo off the cage. Here's a link on what to use it on and how much. :-)
