He was an excellent father--after offering them to be gang-raped, he decided to sleep with them himself--thus educating them in the oldest profession

He's certainly a grayer character than many. And one could argue that Lot did get a healthy dose of retribution, as his daughters later get him drunk and have sex with him in order to repopulate the Earth (which they mistakenly believe to be barren besides themselves), A very twisted fate for him in the end.
In any case God doesn't always match merit with reward - just look at Job, or the man born blind (recorded in John 9). The boy and his parents were sinless, but he was allowed to live as a beggar in blindness through manhood so that his eyes could be opened by Jesus, "so that the works of God might be made visible through him." That is, he was purposefully made to suffer to later serve as an example of God's glory.
PS: I find it deeply disturbing that many recommend this book as a comprehensive and infallible moral compass...

I find YA disturbing period.
As for Lot yes he was a good man. He also offered himself and his wife.
What would you sacrifice to save your world from destruction?
What would you offer up to protect an Angel or perhaps the Lord Himself.
Lot was trying to save these homos from being punished.
He was a good man all around.
He also knew it was unlikely his daughters would be accepted. Too much Gay power in that community, just like today.
There is a new punishment coming and it won't just be a couple of big towns either.

you're not going to find any character in the bible who is completely righteous and without faults. even moses, who is clearly named as THE greatest prophet of all time, the guy who led the israelites to freedom across the red sea and through the desert, in the end was not even allowed to enter the promised land because of his sins and had to die only having viewed it from a distance. the bible doesn't set any human being up as being perfect... because then people might start to worship that person as some sort of god or ascended being.

Lot was a man who tried his best to serve God but was easier to tempt into an easy lifestyle than Abram was. He was the only person in Sodom who was hospitable. That made all the difference back in those days.

I think you don't like bible or complain to bible by telling Christians that the bible teach differently. Well, as I use to say, send this error message to KJV or NIV for correction or additional footnote for this event.

Yes, God saved him, but I don't know if he was "good" as in really good but good enough to earn God's compation (although he lives us all).
