A boatswains mate does have a civilian counterpart. You would be qualified to be hired as a deckhand on just about any civilian boat or ship. However, if you are looking for a land based civilian job, then either pick a different rating or take college courses while in the Navy or right after you get out.
Good luck.

The Merchant Marines are a good choice; the money is good.
Regardless you would be shortchanging yourself if you did not take advantage of the Navy's College at Sea Program. It is free and if you get you AA while in the Navy it will give you a head start and cut you overall college costs in half.
Go for it.

Go to collage and learn what you can,
As far a being a boatswain mate in the Navy. My brother, a boatswains mate, went on to be a rigger at the ship yard in Pearl Harbor until he retired.

If you don't mind more sea time, join the Merchant Marine. Lot's of time at sea, but HUGE paychecks!
Otherwise, yes, get as many classes done as possible while in the service, and then even if you don't get a degree while still enlisted, you will transfer those credits to a college as a civilian.
I would suggest shooting for an AA degree (Associate in Arts) at the very least, but that will take 3-4 years probably. If you have the time, at least try.

I agree with the person who posted before me, you should go to college while you are enlisted no matter what. The Navy has excellent tuition assistance programs.

I served as an AT for six years. I feel for ya.
I did some courses while I was in. I'm now out and in my fourth year at the University of Minnesota. It helped a lot!
