Dry conditions and warm if possible. Most of them live in arid conditions and dampness can lead to disease.

it is best to keep them in dry conditions because if they are always walking on mud they will get a fungus infection. also, Chinese painted quail are also known as button quail. when they hatch, they are as big as bumblebees. when they are adults, males are 4 and a half inches and females are 5 inches. these are the smallest quail, game bird, and bird that is legal to keep. they are tiny, but you can just keep them in a tank. they can fly, and tend to "popcorn" a foot or two up in the air when startled, so the tank should have a cloth top.

In the SW U.S. the quail all live in arid places. But there are quail from SE Asia. I didn't know about those Chinese swamp quail.
Best be sure what kind you have.
Most animals in captivity need good dry areas.

In the wild, Chinese Painted Quails are known to live in swampy areas.
However, they do like it dry, especially if there is dry dirt to have baths in. :) And they like plenty of hiding places and long grass if possible too.
