I really dislike it when people give a thumbs down for disagreeing with a point, which often seems to be the case.
I'm not level 2 yet (because I don't answer just for points :P) so I can't really say what I Have done... but I've often wished for the ability to thumbs down certain answers.
I very much dislike it when people say things in the answer that are completely and utterly unrelated to the question. Sometimes, the questions are very serious, but get a barrage of worthless nonsense.
Aside from that, the standard inflamatory or rude answer suffices.

I usually give a thumbs down if the answer doesnt have anything to do with the question or if the answer is rude or mocking someone that doesnt deserve to be mocked.
If the person asking the question is being a jerk then it would be appropriate for the answers back to mock the question asker so I wouldnt give it a thumbs down.

I'll generally give thumbs-down if the answer is
1) really dumb (barely readable, sweeping generalizations, fallacious reasoning, some entire web site copied and pasted, etc.)
2) a meaningless "place holder" post
3) factually incorrect (and yes I know the difference between a stated claim and a worded opinion)
4) and/or if the answer is irrelevant to the question.

Well for example if some one asks a question about God and some one says they don't believe in God, I don't give them thumbs down, because that is their belief. But if some one asks a question and the person who answers, puts down God and Christians, or makes fun of them, some times i will give them a thumbs down. It is according to how rudely the answer is put. But mostly I just ignore them.

I rarely ever give thumbs down, only when someone says something I think is really stupid like when people answer like 100 questions with the same VERY LONG passage about why we should convert to some religion. That's just annoying.

Funny you should ask that! I was just giving some thumbs downs and I have the answer.
I was reading one question and a Jewish member answered something like, "I'll stick with Judaism, thanks."
I gave her a thumbs up.
Another answerer was a Christian who answered something like: "Blah, blah, blah, the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ, God, King of Kings, the Holy Bible, blah, blah, blah."
I gave a thumbs down for that.
I give thumbs down for bible/koran quotes. I loathe lectures. I'm completely turned off by rants and I hate deliberately mean crap.
Thumbs up for funny though! I really appreciate a good funny, with taste.

I give a thumbs down if the answer is just stupid, or an "I don't know". I don't give thumbs down just because I disagree with the answer, that's the whole point of Y!A is to get differing opinions. But if the answer is inflammatory or hateful, or just a stupid answer, it gets a thumbs down.

Ignorance is the big one. Sometimes I see an answer that is so rediculously wrong I want to make more accounts just to give them more thumbs down....then I remember no one really cares.

I give thumbs down to people who are completely antagonistic no matter what their viewpoint
if the answer is enormous and obviously cut and paste I'll give it a thumbs down so that I don't have to scroll down for an eternity to read other people's viewpoint

Stupidity gets an automatic thumbs down.
Answers that are simply mean-spirited also warrant the downward pointing digit!
