There are free anti-virus scanners availble. They work well. I like AVG the best of all the free anti-virus programs.
If you are not willing to spend money it is good to have some kind of anti-virus software

Personally I bought Webroot's Spysweeper, their product is great and well worth the money. Watch Best Buy ads because sometimes it goes on sale for $10 to $15.

Viruses.....or spyware: some consider them both the same. Limewire carries spyware--but they can easily be defeated with smart everyday use of spyware cleaner programs like Spybot Search N' Destroy.
AVG free edition also comes highly recommended as well.
You only need to execute the Limewire setup file.

It depends. Usually one that you download like that has to be executed in order to infect your machine. However, you should get rid of it as soon as possible, because some of them have the ability to self execute. At the same time, some other viruses can execute programs and other viruses.
You should do a scan for viruses and spyware/malware and be careful and avoid downloading things that look like viruses.

Well, there are a lot of things you get from p2p like Limewire, and although you may not get infected immediately, you certainly do need to run protection made especially for p2p.
A great free program is Avast! virus protection from, I think, www.avast.com.......I use it. Before I had problems with pop-ups after I used p2p. now I have no trouble!
It is free. You do not need the version you can buy.

Not unless you run them. You must scan all downloads first prior to opening, that's the basic rule. Of course, you must have anti virus installed in your pc. Try AVG Free from Grisoft.
