You said it yourself, you know what it sounds like. Chances are it wasn't anything resembling a real language, it's just how you interpreted it. Or maybe it was a snippet of Japanese that you heard on the street or in a movie and it was being replayed. Your mind is an incredibly powerful thing, you know things you don't even know you know. If someone asked you to repeat the bit of japanese you heard at some point in the past, you probably couldn't do it consciously, but it's stored in the back of your head somewhere and your dreams unlock it.

"linguistics is what i live for..."
This is why you dream about languages. It is very near and dear to you. Now, the Japanese part...It is likely, someone within earshot mention the word Japan or some other variation of the word. You could have even heard the song "I'm turning Japanese" on the radio. Anything is possible.

Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Egyptian, Arabic and Ukrainian sound similar; how do you know it was Japanese? On the other hand some people believe that your soul leave your body when you are dreaming, that phenom is called "astral voyage" your soul could be any where and any time. Did you see "déjavu" movie? Sometimes we see or hear something that our soul saw or heard.

Your dreams are kind of replay of what happened throughout your day or whatever is on your mind. Your dreams pull up different memories that are stored in your subconscious. The Japanese that you heard in your dream was probably either your opinion of what Japanese sounds like or a phrase in Japanese that you heard somewhere.

Let me ask if you understood the language that was spoken and did you also compete in the conversation?
If not, the dream implies that there is something in your life that is foreign to you, something you do not understand. Japanese is an exotic language to those of us in the western world. When we hear a language that we do not speak, in dreams, its meaning indicates we have little knowledge, if any, of what the message is trying to offer.......... and yet, it is spoken word.......
I did a dream for a fellow who dreamt that he lived with an Iraqi family. They spake Iraqi, lived like Iraqi's and there were Iraqi children in the house. He said that he was trying to find a way out. Suddenly, he saw a black air plane and ran out the door dodging bullets. he caught a hold of the rope ladder and climbed up to safety.
Basically, the dream stated that this fellow had a family. But, he no longer associated himself to them.... so he saw them as foreign... and this language of people because he does no longer understand his relationship with them..... but also because we are at war with this country... Naturally, this people because of the war... But, he was hoping to find a woman that would help rescue him from being in the relationship with the woman he was dealing with.
****the dream was done for a friend of mine who found out the guy she had recently gotten involved with was using her. She told him the interpretation and he confessed that he had 7 children by 3 women that he was paying child support to.

Either you're an otaku, or you heard someone say a sentence somewhere, and it stayed in your head subconsciously.

Not everything you have in your head is something you understand.
Is that enough words to get the idea across?
