He is not ill, they have a tendency to sleep more during winters. This is to save energy and ensure that they are able to survive harsh climate.

Hamsters really do not hibernate. But their body functions will slow down if room temperature is too low. If your hamster is like this, then it's best if you do not bother him.
Dwarf Hamsters aren't known to hibernate.
Syrian Hamsters should be warmed enough to not go into hibernation but if they do go into hibernation for too long, they can die. If this happens, wake him up, and feed him food, water, and give him some warmth.
How to tell if a hamster is hibernating: Their whiskers will be twitching.

* If its an old hamster then he's like any other senior animal, even ppl. The older you get being a senior the more you sleep, less active you become.
* in colder room temperatures, the hamster is encouraged to go into hibernation.
Room temperature should be: around 65 to 70 degrees farenheit.
Humidity 40 to 60 %.

The room temperature could be cold and makes him hibernate. He could also just be getting old. Mine sleeps a whole lot more than usual, becuz hes getting a bit older. You should play with him more when he awakes so he'll be up earlier waiting to come out and play.

if you get the hamster out in the day then yeah it will sleep more! or it could be getting old- my mates hamster just died and it was fine and jumping about in its cage one day but the next day it didn't do much it just lay there until about 1 am and then it just came out for about 1 hour, so your hamster is either old or just dying!!!

Sounds like old age.
I've had four hamsters and as they got older they got up later.
For as long as your hamster is eating, drinking and urine and stools are normal and your hamster is acting the same when awake then he is fine, it's just a sign that he is getting old.

They age fast, 2 - 21/2 year life span and they do slow down with age. Cold yes will keep them down too.

He may be hibernating. My dad buried mine - he thought it was dead. I found it trying to get back in to it's cage where the food was!
