It's not working.
You're not both happy.
The love is one-sided, or not there at all.
One or both of you have bad qualities that the other just can't live with, no matter how good everything else is.
One of you is an emotional vampire, feeding off the other and giving nothing back.
One of you has betrayed the other so deeply that the trust cannot be repaired.
One of you has your own demons to exorcise before being able to give yourself fully in a relationship.
It used to be great, but it's just not there any more.
You've grown apart.
The relationship has no future, and it's time to move on.
One or more of the above, AND there's very little chance that it could be remedied, even if you confronted it together and tried hard to work it out.
Yes, a breakup is painful, but it's often necessary, and can lead to both people getting into a better situation in the end. Only you can decide if it's necessary, or if this is a relationship that can be be repaired. Whatever you do, do it openly, honorably, and compassionately.

I guess the question is worded a bit funny. A good reason to break up would be that he is abusive or cheating.

A good reason will be the best reason if you know the reason. If you're looking for a reason here to tell your bf, then its never a good reason!!!
But personally, I think the best is that he cheated on you =)

tell him frankly that you wanted to break up with, that your tired of following him and vice versa...
that your goal for now is to have a peace of mind and privacy...
that his like holding your neck already for all the times that you wanted to be with him like always..
that your tired of his vices and sometimes takes your allowance just to buy a cigarette, beer or something...
tell to him to have some privacy for now, give you a lot of rest and be friends for now...
