It's actually quite common in Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, India. They usually sell dates in the market. Chinese uses red dates as one of the many ingredients in their soups, while Islams consume sweet dates before they break fast. Usually the dates sold are dried or packeted. I'm not too sure about canned dates though...sorry =)

Dates are common. The fact that so many people answering this question never heard of them is sad. They are wonderful in breads and cakes and cookies or just plain by themselves. They have always been close to the boxes of raisins in the grocery store. Even my little country store in a small town in Missouri 60 years ago had them. Make an effort to try some. They are good and good for you.

Dates aren't common. An asian neighborhood will have them. A very multi-cultural neighborhood will have them as well.
If you still cant find them check for any local green market or try a well known and accepted health food store that can point you in the right direction.

Never seen canned dates. They have fresh ones in the fruit and nuts section of grocery stores. Sometimes fresh by weight also, but usually in woven plates, covered by cellophane.

In most stores you get them in a box that is shrink wrapped. They are always seen around Christmas time when people might want to make up a fruit gift basket. The rest of the year the better supermarkets carry them. Try on the web from Harry and David which sells premium fruit. http://www.harryanddavid.com/gifts/store/home___

In my area they "hide" dates in the produce section in round plastic tubs. I think the brand is Calavo. Dole sells dried fruit as well, in shiny bags that sit upright on the shelf.
I've never seen them canned--sounds awful.

Dates are stocked in two different departments of most grocery stores. You will find fresh dates(packaged) with the nuts in the produce dept. and the dried dates, with raisins and prunes in the baking aisle.
