According to John 8:6-8, the Pharisees, in an attempt to discredit Jesus, brought a woman charged with adultery before him. Then they reminded Jesus that adultery was punishable by stoning under Mosaic law and challenged him to judge the woman so that they might then accuse him of disobeying the law. Jesus thought for a moment and then replied, “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” The people crowded around him were so touched by their own consciences that they departed. When Jesus found himself alone with the woman, he asked her who were her accusers. She replied, “No man, lord.” Jesus then said, “Neither do I condemn thee: go and sin no more.”

John 8

The people (the men) in the town were going to stone to death a woman caught in the act of adultery (where was the man?). Jesus knelt down and wrote something in the sand (some scholars think he may have been writing down the names of the men in that crowd that had been with the woman), and said, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." One by one the crowd dispersed.

That is an amazing story. Jesus exposed the hypocrisy of that crowd with one sentence. And gave the adulterous woman forgiveness, and her dignity back, as well.

When the Pharisees brought a woman who was caught in the act of adultery to Jesus and asked Him if she should be stoned, Jesus replied, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her" (John 8:7).

I think you need to read the story within context to understand why he didnt start throwing stones. He was trying to prevent a stoning.
