Or am I just old school at ripe old age of 56?
My old man had me shaking hands when I was six.
He was real big on that.
Nothing worse than squishy weak handshake.
Like grabbing a large oyster.

with women I of course hold back a bit.
Some women do real light handshake...which is OK.
I worked for Seattle Firefighter...woman....BUFF!
She had firm handshake :)
I try to size up woman first.

I've always been taught to give a good, firm handshake...that it does say alot more about you.....weaker handshakes showed, of course, weakness.

*By the way, don't let my 'squishy' name fool you...I have a good handshake.... :)

Most definitely. I'm young and I think it is so weird when people have limp handshakes. It gets so awkward and I believe that a handshake shows the confidence and self esteem level of a person.

I'm not sure if "put off" is the right term, but let's just say I'm not AS impressed, at least by the handshake. I also don't love it when the handshake is too strong.

I am still young and yes it does put me off. I think you apply enough pressure to not be overbearing but a weak handshake shows lack of involvement and interest in the person which can at times be worse.

maybe you should ask your police cheif this same thing. let him know how you feel. or maybe the place you work at is not as great as it should be, mabye a good friend of the chief gets a promotion instead, ive worked places like that, (im not a cop though, but you know what i mean right?) this one place i worked, this one guy who always knew everyone and was always the life of the lunch room, hes the one who got the promotion and not me, it was stupid. i was a better worker, more productive and smarter and somehow he got it. and that is why. he was the poplular kid at school. but if they are all mature there and stuff, i would just talk to the cheif and let him know how i feel. hope that helps. also lol, im glad i helped a cop today, or tried because for the last month i was driving around without insurance or a drivers license, but i needed to do businness and had no money. but now i have insurance and have my license paid for. and by helping you today i feel a little better about it lol. also, i stole alot of stuff as a younger guy and often did other illegal things lol. sorry.

Funny that, I can name the people that have given me wet fishes, more so than the ones who have given me a good honest pleasant hand shake.
Im with you, nothing sizes people up better and more quickly than a handshake, bit like a first kiss....get it right your sweet, get it wrong your doomed from then on.

I can not stand it when shaking hands and I feel like I have a dead fish in my hand. I also hate it when people close their hands early and shake my fingers.

I had one person accuse me of doing that until I kept pointing out he was the one doing "Psst, look down at your hand" - 3 times broke him of that ;)

A good firm handshake and eye to eye contact.

i hate it. . it's just awkward bc it takes me by surprise. . so i'll be smiling and reach out for a handshake and then my smile just sort of fades and i'm like "this is so weird, why is this handshake so weak?"

i don't know, it's just weird to me. i'm only 20, but i grew up learning to shake hands and that handshakes should be firm.

Yes, it does put me off. I think it's a sign of fakeness with some amount of disrespect. Nothing gives a great first impression more than a firm handshake with eye contact!

It puts me off, too. But I've come to realize that not everyone has been instructed on everyday manners. You should always look the person in the eye, give a firm but not bone crushing shake (two pumps max) and introduce yourself.
