The general idea is that microorganisms come to feast on your food. They break down the giant carbon-based molecules in the food to eat. Also, the air and water will react with the sugars that pumpkins are made of. That's more or less what decay is. I don't suggest you turn in my three or so sentences though, because your teacher will probably give you an F. You should, however, use this as a start of a little bit of research. Science is fun!
