And don't independent contractors (car drivers) work off a 1099 from the owner of the car?

thats a good question and yes he is. He works (drives) for another person. The Owner operater is a thing of the past. The reason is that the cost of running a team is just way to high.

Most are independent contractors. There are a few owner/operator teams, (Stanton Barret, for one), but they are just about a thing from the past.

I believe that would be correct in most drivers cases but not all. Jeff Gordon and Kyle Petty are Part owners in cars!!!!!
