She had a great teacher, Anne Sullivan. Of course Helen Keller was very intelligent or she could not have managed it! (There are sign languages and "Braille" blind sign writing ). There was a film many years ago about Helen Keller and her teacher and how Helen learned to talk and write, a very interesting and moving life story! Helen Keller was a very emphatic person. She did very much for the deaf and blind of the world! She was just a very admirable woman!

I can not remember the young woman's name. Helen Keller's father hired this woman to teach her a new communication technique. It involved taping sequences into Helen's open hand. Once she learned to listen via this method, the young woman then taught her how to use the same language to talk to her. The young woman spent the rest of her life next to Helen's side translating for her. In this way Helen Keller was able to give speeches and to listen to debates. As for writing, this same woman taught her how to right in braille. The standard language used by the blind. She was also taught how to write the alphabet by using a ruler to keep her lines straight so she could communicate with those that could not read braille.

I don't think that Helen Keller talked. She communicated by use of sign language that involves making signs into another person's hand. She learned language through this method. I don't know if she wrote herself or dictated her writings through the use of signs.
EDIT: I stand corrected. I looked at the Wikipedia article, which explains how Helen Keller learned to speak. Interesting!

she learned sign language and put them into someone hands. So the other person knows what signs she was making.
