Being from the racetrack. This is very nice piece of work. You should put this on a DVD and send it to The Jacksons in Maryland. They also bred the 2000 Guinness winner of the same year as Barbaro won the Ky Derby but didn't own the horse. Really nice .Thanks for letting us see it.

I can see your point, Newmarketsalsa, but the vet really thought they had the pain controlled. At the end when it was clear they didn't, they put him down. Still, even Michael Matz, his trainer, said that near the end he thought maybe it was getting to be too much to put Barbaro through. Though you can make an argument that by trying to save Barbaro, the vets learned things that might help them save the next horse. Maybe eventually, veterinary medicine can progress to where we can save horses with bad fractures.

Anyway, the new video of Barbaro is very sad. I had seen most of the photos except that awful one where his pastern is bent against the ground. That made me cry. I guess I want to remember Barbaro at this point as he was when he won the Derby.

Curlin is a cool horse. I have always been impressed with him except in the Haskell. Other than that race he always dug in and fought with courage to the wire. I hope they don't retire him this year.

Thanks for sharing the videos.

Hey Mel!

Your videos are really good! they must have taken you a long time.

Your new Barbaro one could do with a bit of spell check, but that's ok.

I watched your Curlin one too... I thought it was very funny that you left out his dismal, uninspired 3rd place finish behind Any Given Saturday and Hard Spun in the Haskell ;o)

I just wanted to say to hi h that he was put down because he developed laminitis. They did operate on him and try to save him but, as with 99% of horses who suffer catastrophic fractures, the prognosis was bad in the long term.

I'll probably get a thumbs down for this, but in my opinion he should have been put down as soon as the injury happened, rather than put through months of discomfort and, lets be honest, pain. All experienced horseman could have told you that this story was never going to have a happy ending.

Rags to Riches - I'm not trying to be argumentative for the sake of it, so I hope you didn't think that. I understand your point about valuable lessons being learned from Barbaro. My point about the pain is that they would have HAD to have kept him in some pain in order to stop him putting weight on the bad leg. If he was totally pain-free he would not have known that he couldn't walk on his injured leg and could have made the injury worse.
