I have hip issues too, so I sympathize. You should still attempt to do some exercise. Can you get access to a swimming pool a few times a week? Swimming is low impact as well as being good for you. Some gyms also have water-aerobics. I know it sounds a bit daft, but again, it'll be low impact.
Although it's tempting to go on some sort of quickie diet, please don't. You do need to lose weight, but for longterm weight loss, weight maintenance and healthy living, there really is no substitute for changing your eating habits. Lose it too quickly and it'll come right back and more.
Some small changes can make all the difference:
- Eat everything in moderation. Better to have 4-5 small meals a day than 2-3 big gut-busters.
- Read the labels. Know what they mean. Be aware of what you're eating.
- For at least a week, track the nutritional value of everything you eat. You might be surprised at how it adds up.
- replace full fat dairy (butter, cream, milk) with non-fat or low fat alternatives. Avoid saturated fats as much as possible. Not only are they bad for weight but also increase cholesterol and heart disease
- replace soda with water. The sugar in soda is a killer and water not only keeps you hydrated but helps you feel full
- eat lots of lean protein (white meat, fish, beans). Protein helps build muscles and it helps curb carb cravings
- eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables - at *least* 5 servings a day, preferably more.
- replace "white" carbs with wholewheat alternatives (bread, rice, pasta).
- Don't deny yourself every pleasure or you'll go nuts. Try some of the lower fat/lower calorie alternatives (some of them are rather good nowadays) or just have limited portions of your favorite foods
- Avoid all junk food. It's crammed with fat to make it taste good.
- Replace snack foods like chips or cookies with fruit or nuts.
Good luck. More information at the sites below:

Swimming would be a good way to burn calories and tone up.You shouldn't feel any pain while swimming since it's low impact, but you may get tired muscles for a bit until you're used to it.
Some Gyms have water aerobics classes that are fun and teach you how to exercise without the pain.
I have back problems(three herniated disks) and was told by my Doctor and Physical therapist that the best thing I could do is swim and they were right.
Take it slow, start drinking more water and eating a healthier diet.
Best of Luck to you =)

go to your local bike shop and tell them you need a good first bike, ask them to fit you for one so that it's comfortable. and just ride. bicycling is great exercise. it's easy on the joints, it's low impact so people can do it after surgery, it strengthens many muscles in the body.
also find a place to swim.
eat healthy foods, plain and simple, avoid fast food, high fructose corn syrup, which is many things in your kitchen already.
eat natural unprocessed foods,
and you got to lift weights to lose weight. build muscle - muscle burns fat

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 400-600cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day (have lots of veggies to eat in between meals if you are still hungry)
8 glasses of water -carry bottle of water with you and when you feel hungry drink it - we often confuse hunger with thirst (our bodies confuse it)
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for average of 45min - in your case i would suggest walking longer than that or swimming (but swimming actually makes my leg hurt afterwards because i dont feel the pain in water and if its too much), light weight training a few times a week (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, ice cream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
of course you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
