I work for a heavy equipment manufacturer and we use the 5.9 Cummins engine in machinery that weighs up to 60,000 pounds. I often visit Cummins factory in Columbus Indiana, where they send Dodge up to 700 of these per DAY.
Engineers, who will go nameless, laugh at the Dodge installation of this engine. It was NEVER originally designed for such LIGHT AND EASY installations!!
This engine was designed for a duty cycle of 60-80%, or % of time the machine is at full power per hour. They tell me that this engine in a pickup going 60 MPH down the road has a load factor of 18%. In the past, Dodge used to compare internal parts sizes of the Cummins verses Ford and GM. It has MUCH large internals. Engineers laughing say that it will last with proper maintenance and EASY 400,000 miles and the truck will go before the engine.
The new 6.7 to meet emmissions is even stronger.
Good Luck

essentially infinite. you take care of it,and keep up on the maintenance schedule, odds are very good you could be looking for a new truck to put around your cummins. there are several clubs for dodge trucks with over a million miles. the military has many 900-series 5 ton trucks with their original cummins engines, and this series was introduced in vietnam.the cummins can also be found in tanks, coach buses, the new to the army stryker, commercial marine applications, generators, and numerous other applications where install and pretty much forget, reliability is necessary.

Ran a 90 Cummins to 500,000 miles with no issues, just regular maintenance. 02 to 1993 are generation 2 it was not till 2003 when they added the new body style to the CTD Models. 2003 models you have to watch for SO (Standard Output) vs HO (High output). 03 & 04 models had the HO CTD have 305 HP with 3.5 inch turbo back to muffler and 4 inch muffler to tip with no Litter boxes (Cat's). No real difference from the 600 series 2004.5 and newer, only 325hp and 600 lb/ft of torque vs 305 hp 555 lb/ft torque and 4 inch turbo back but you have the litter box! Own a 04 HO CTD 4x4 Laramie quadcab and it has been flawless and have 75,000 miles and even added The Edge Juice Attitude, AFE CAI and added 4 inch exhaust with Diamond Eye muffler and it keeps up with alot of vehicles and even gets a steady 19MPG city and 24 MPG.

I've seen a couple in the seven hundred thousands and one past a million miles.Anywhere between a hundred and fifty thousand and two hundred thousand should run good for quite a while longer. If you can check to see if proper maintenance has been done before purchasing.

The truck will wear out before the engine so long as the preventive maintenance was kept up on the engine. A diesel lasting 400K to 500K is pretty common.

200 thousand would be considered high, even though it will probably be in good condition,it will still need work done to it in another 70-100 thousand or sooner, its a good idea if you buy one to try to get one under 150 thousand, good luck with it.
