I am going to answer by asking a question...sorry...
What do you believe about where we came from before we were born, the WHOLE purpose for being here, and where do we (spirits only obviously) go after our body checks out?
Here is my answer to your question and my feelings on the question I asked. You have to ask yourself those questions to understand this answer. Both Jesus and the thief died on the cross. What happened to their spirits once they passed? Do you think that the thief's spirit was released from his body but Jesus' spirit remained with it until his resurrection? I am of the firm belief that once we pass, our spirit is lifted up and awaits judgment. I would hope that Paradise is the place our spirits go. Since Jesus paid the ultimate price for ALL our sins, I'd have to logically assume that the thief would also go to paradise. In the context with the question, I believe that Jesus' spirit was lifted and that He and the thief saw each other. When it was time for Christ to return to the world, he rejoined his mortal body. I don't believe that he was captive prisoner in his physical body for three days.
I am no scriptorian, but that is the jest I get from reading the accounts in the scriptures. I have prayed extensively for confirmation of our earthly sojourn and my testimony is that we are here to learn in a mortal world before being taken home to be with God again, with more knowledge and experience. Hence the phrase "You can't take it (worldly things) with you when you go". I am taking my knowledge completely on faith and confirmation from prayer, so take it as you will.

The third heaven is the Kingdom of God, the best place to go when you die---but I'm not sure exactly what Paradise is----people have interpreted it differently. In the book, "Heaven is Real" by Choo Thomas we clearly see there is a 1st, 2nd and 3rd heaven. Although the 2nd and 3rd heaven are not anything compared to the 3rd heaven, they are certainly much better than going to hell for all eternity. There are different places in hell too---some have a great deal more suffering than others, but I believe it's a totally miserable place in any area of hell. Some Bible teachers think that Paradise is the upper crust of hell---I just don't think so.

You are correct, Jesus did not go to Heaven after He died. Jesus went to visit those that died before Him in Abraham's bosom. This is also called Hades and Paradise. Hades is the very place talked about in Luke 16:19-31.

When Jesus died it is said he "descended" into what would have been called Abraham's bosom..the place where the faithful waited for the Messiah . He had the keys to death and the grave. So the thief would have gone with him to Paradise. Then Jesus ascended to be with the Father. Since God is outside time and space I don't think it would make much difference in direction or time. Once all sin had been atoned for, people already dead to go to be in the presence of God.

Paradise is exactly where both of them went when they died. Paradise is not heaven, it is part of a place known as Hades where people who died went before the cross. No one could go to heaven because the atonement had not been paid for their sins. Jesus went there and so did the thief, and then 3 days later He rose and went to heaven, taking all the believers in Him with Him to heaven.

Jesus released all the dead from hell, and sent them to paradise, They saw Him coming in a cloud with power and glory. They all had to wait until the other were also killed as they where, and at the end of the world (age), Jesus would open the book of life, and they would be judged according to their works.
Those who done good they would go on the the resurrection of life and those who done evil onto the resurrection of the second death. All those from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th age were there, for many were called but few were choosen.
The thief was in paradise on that day, but only his good works would allow him to stay.

But that does not mean that the soon to be dead man knew anything about or "felt" those days. Time is an element of the physical universe, but its spiritual realm ramifications are completely unknown to us. If, as seems likely, the spirit does not feel, know, or even really understand time, then the answer is simplistic, at death, the criminal went to heaven and found Jesus there waiting for him.
Only in this life and realm do we experience time. "Eternity" in the spiritual realm is outside the influence of time. There is no "before" or "after," hence "I AM."
discipleabct:
Matthew 9:4 Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’? 6 SO I WILL PROVE TO YOU THAT THE SON OF MAN HAS THE AUTHORITY ON EARTH TO FORGIVE SINS.” THEN JESUS TURNED TO THE PARALYZED MAN AND SAID, “STAND UP, PICK UP YOUR MAT, AND GO HOME!”
... It had NOTHING to do with his "good works," but was an act of the will and grace of Jesus.

(Luke 23:43) “And he said to him: “Truly I tell you today, You will be with me in Paradise.”
THE man beside Jesus did not have long to live. “Jesus,” he pleaded, “remember me when you get into your kingdom.” Jesus replied: “Truly I tell you today, You will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:42, 43) True, that unnamed man was not dying from an illness in old age; he was being executed for criminal activity. Nevertheless, aging individuals can derive great encouragement from his desperate situation.
We cannot but admire that man’s extraordinary confidence! Even though Jesus was dying on a torture stake next to him, that man had no doubt that Jesus would certainly rule as King in God’s Kingdom. Also, he reasoned that Jesus could one day remember him favorably. Just imagine—that condemned man will awaken from death in a glorious paradise, with Jesus as King!
Mankind is in a position similar to that of the dying wrongdoer. How so? Regardless of our age, we are all paying the penalty for sin and are in need of salvation. (Romans 5:12) Like that criminal we can turn to Christ Jesus for hope—even hope for relief from the painful problems that occur in later life! To be sure, Jesus has held out to mankind the prospect of everlasting life in physical and mental perfection on a paradise earth.—John 3:16, 36.
