In short, it means to lead you astray or be lead astray.

Another words, 'throw you off the path'. Deception is essentially a temptation that results in betrayal or some other bad result.

These are good and useful, but then there is deception along the lines of believing false christs and false gospels.

A deceived person does not know they are deceived, and Scripture says the devil can deceive anyone he wants.

Once a person is deceived in this regard, it is nearly impossible to convince them otherwise.

And there are many methods of deception, and the vast majority of people have no idea what they are, and how to avoid them. All too many think they cannot be deceived; that they are too smart to be deceived, and this only serves to set themselves up for being deceived. When you are up against a being who has been around since the beginning, and you have been around for only a few years, don't think for a moment you by yourself can stand up to him and his deceptions.

To be deceived means to believe a partial truth that is mixed up with a lie. A man might think that he has true faith because he goes to church but if he doesn't obey God's word as it applies to his life then he is deceived about being a Christian to use your first example.

James 2:14 What does it profit, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Is that kind of faith able to save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the necessary things of the body, what is the benefit? 17 Thus also that faith, if it does not have works, is dead, being by itself 18 But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by means of my works.
