From the Social Security Administration's web site:

"Since 1973, social security numbers have been issued by our central office. The first three (3) digits of a person's social security number are determined by the ZIP Code of the mailing address shown on the application for a social security number. Prior to 1973, social security numbers were assigned by our field offices. The number merely established that his/her card was issued by one of our offices in that State."

Big Dog's on the right track. You can google the history of social secutiry numbers. The first numbers represent the State you were born in (or it may be where your ssn is was registered). I live in Michigan, and am in the healthcare industry, so I see a lot of ssn's. In Michigan, '3' is the most common first number.

The first 3 numbers use to represent the state and area you registered. I'm not sure it does any longer. 42x used to represent AL. 0xx was New York and 24x was NC if memory serves.
