wine and window guy: is telling people, for example, that pinot grigio is a red grape "subjective"? lol

for the record, i'm referring to the factual information, NOT the subjective tasting profiles and things like that!

It happens because the questions *and* answers are open to the public. There are no qualifications required other than to have a computer and a yahoo account.
Sometimes it takes a lot of willpower not to flame the living crap out of some of the retarded attempts at either an answer or mere wit...most of which with much fail.
That's why it's handy to drop a link or two to back up your statement.
...don't even get me started with the idiots who get off on answering with "I don't know" WTF???

Yes
And it really irritates when a factually incorrect answer is picked as 'best answer'...
I am constantky amazed that people who have no knowledge of this subject whatsoever come to this section and feel qualified to give an answer, and I'm hacked off by those that think that copying and pasting an entire wikipedia entry counts as an answer.
Re Pinot Grigio -- I haven't seen the question & answer you refer to, but the Pinot Grigio grape skin colour can vary from a greyish color up to a light red color, and there are pink Pinot Grigios on the market. I have seen the grapes being harvested and -- until then was under the impression they were white since I had seen only white PG wines -- but there is a wide variation in their color.
As to an earlier question here, while spirits do not age after bottling, alcohol in the form of wine can and does age in the bottle.

I've seen it so many times that I'm not sure why I bother responding. I've been in this industry since '88 and a wine buff long before then, having taken a number of courses and read loads of books fostering my passion. And I'm still learning! When I see some of the hack answers and how they are either voted as best or selected by the questioner, I bite my tongue. I try not to appear as an elitist snob, but for pity sake, some of these answers are so misleading or wrongheaded - I want to buy a nice cognac for a gift under $100- Response: Hennessey Ricard. Get the picture?

Its not just with wine. People ask all the time about what Vodka is made of. (people still answer potatoes....) People still believe that if you let alcohol sit in the bottle, it will get stronger. (it gets weaker because the alcohol evaporates faster then water, which means there is less alcohol in the bottle.) People still believe that sealed bottles continue to age. (picking up what, the flavor of glass??? Alcohol is aged in wooden casks, giving it flavor.)
I don't know how long it will take to stomp this out, hopefully it will at some point.
EDIT: Oops, sorry pontac, forgot to mention that I was talking about spirits only. Beer and wine can and do age in the bottle, but beer can only do that for so long before going bad. Wine on the other hand can do that for many decades before going bad. Spirits can sit in the bottle forever and not go bad, from my understanding this is because there is no yeast due to the distilling process that spirits undergo. (beer/wine still has the yeast in them.)

You really want to cringe? Go into the health section. People with serious ailments and health issues would rather ask millions of strangers questions instead of going to the doctor. Especially pregnant women. Kinda makes ya wonder. Nice observation, by the way. I love reading a question that I myself have been pondering.

i cringe while chuckling, actually. it is not only here though; i work at an up-scale restaurant, and have to listen to wine-reps spewing mis-information constantly : yesterday i had to sit through a presentation for a chardonnay "that compares to silver oak chardonnay", never mind, that silver oak only produces cabernet sauvignion (fact). we were also told, that "the chianti grape is used in making chianti, and thus gives the wine its name". so, no, i am not surprised of some of the answers offered here. it makes me appreciate answerers like "J" that much more.

i think a lot of the things people post are more opinions than fact. but there are those creeps out there that like to mess with people's heads. it makes me laugh that people actually just eat these ridiculous answers up. what REALLY makes me cringe is all the health related questions people ask. are you seriously going to take some stranger's "answer" as medical advice? scares the heck out of me...

it makes me cringe. I have worked in the wine industry i napa and the shear amount of mis-information just flabbergasts me. the fact that I have to refer to my fave wine as "red zinfandel" makes my skin crawl. i read labels for work on a daily basis and deal with winemaker's and major wineries from Kendall-Jackson to Korbel and the amount of mis-information here is amazing. something anybody can find on google with couple quick clicks of the mouse.

What really annoys me are people who think that they know everything and criticize how people answer questions. Get over yourself. Its the internet. This is just for fun.
