Very well, thank you is the correct response. And remember it is a greeting, not a question. No one asking cares how you really are feeling.

It depends on who is asking and what the siruation is! : )
If you are at work and a co-worker asks you, you could be professional and simply say, "I am fine, thanks! How are you today?" That is polite and it is nice to ask the other person how THEY are doing, as well!

BUT, if your best friend asks you, and if your boyfriend just broke up with you the night before, and your pet gold fish died, too, then it is perfectly acceptable to burst into tears!
: )
; )
THE BOTTOM LINE:
-- If the asker is someone you know just casually or professionally, then the polite answer is:
" I am fine! Thanks for asking! How are you today?"

-- But if it is a close friend or your Mother, let it all out!

Depends on who asks...if it's a friend tell the truth...if it's just a "polite" question, the proper answer would be; "Fine, thank you and yourself?"

Just don't start giving a complete rundown of all your health problems. I know a few people who do that.

"Doing good" means you're doing good things, not FEELING good. You should say, "I'm quite well thank you", or "I'm in the pink, thank you for asking."
