A mercenary is a soilder who works specifically for money and has no particular loyalty to king, country, religion etc. Mercenaries in modern warfare are usually advisers, trainers and consultants rather than actual combat troops. However, other mercenaries are highly trained and so are involved in special operations.
In Iraq we see a whole new type of "soldier of fortune". These are people working security for private firms. They are not new to Iraq and many large international operations (eg mining in Nigeria ) would use military trained secrutiy personnel.
Now we begin to get into a whole grey area. What if the these security firms are paid to murder someone. They can operate outside of the normal rules of engagement that the US army uses and the connection can be denied.
Alternatively they might just be a group who are adicted to the old "bang bang", which is why they do this job in the first place. Which means they go out shooting people. Blackwater has a reputation for being trigger happy. But don't forget they are in a very dangerous situation and once bullets start flying mistakes get made.

A merc is a gun for hire...
if you think about it... could osama hire blackwater?... im gonna take a shot in the dark and say no
so by definition.... no... they arent.
Blackwater is a civilian contracted company who is authorized to use deadly force.
The end
I can tell you now we are NOT the only country who has govt contracted security officers.

They are mercenaries in a sense but they aren't killers. Think about this, if you were being shot at and the shooters were in a crowd of people, what would you do? That is the situation they and our soldiers face in Iraq everyday. And if they leave then if you think we have to many troops in Iraq now, wait until we have to deploy 30,000 more of them over to Iraq to increase security again.

if they were mercs howcome I can't hire them? they're only working for the Defense Department, which makes them more like the Waffen SS. They are a disgrace to real soldiers and marines.
