it's not really superior, just different...
X360 is better at online, cheaper, and has a larger library of First Person Shooters,
while the PS3 has more RPG's, and few good feutures Like blue Ray, but for a larger price.
i personally perfer the the 360, for it's cheapness, good online support, and excellent library of games that i enjoy.
but it's personal preference.. just choose what you like and run with it... it doesn't have to be the "best"

What is so special and better about the PS3? O.K. here is a list:
Built in WiFi
Bluetooth
Blu-Ray drive
Blu-Ray DVD's used for PS3 games which are HD, and can store over 4 times as much data than a standard DVD on a single layer Blu-Ray disc. Xbox 360 games have to be upscaled to HD when PS3 games are already HD.
Built in WiFi
Free Online Play
The PS3 is a more reliable system. The Xbox 360 has a 33% chance of getting the Red Ring of Death and the PS3's hardware failure is less than 1%.
The PS3 has good exclusive games out now, and has way more good exclusive games coming out than the Xbox 360.
The Sixaxis controller makes gameplay more interactive and gives you a different gameplay experience than Xbox 360 games.
And most importantly, the PS3 has the Cell Processor that makes it the most advanced game console.
And in closing, I think that the Xbox 360 is already out-dated. The Xbox 360's are ridden with hardware failure. Microsoft can't produce exclusive games like the PS3's exclusives because a single DVD won't let them do what they really want to do in a game. GTA 4 will have to be released on multiple discs for the 360, while everything fits on the Blu-Ray DVD for the PS3.
What makes the PS3 revolutionary is that it is a console that is probably 2 years ahead of it's time. With the PS3 using Blu-Ray technology there is no doubt in my mind that Blu-Ray will win the format war, and already Blu-Ray DVD's outsell HD-DVD's.

In ten years time... Ten years from now current gen consoles will be completley obsolete. Technology moves so fast these days that my mobile phone will probably be more powerfull than a PS3 by then.
Its not really superior, just different. The Xbox is good in certain areas and the PS3 in others.
If you want a game machine then go for the 360, if you want a media centre then go for the PS3.
Check out places like IGN.com and you will find that the PS3 and 360 graphics are almost identical. The only real exception to this are EA games which for some reason perform better on the 360.
Don't listen to your friends, read reviews on multi-format game websites and decide for yourself.
PS. To those uneducated PS3 fanboys. My current Quad Core PC with Directx 10 768MB nVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra is already way ahead of a PS3....FACT

It has a revolutionary CPU "Cell", which has 1+7 kernels - 35 times more powerful, than PS2. There is Blu-ray drive - discs can handle up to 54 GB (200 GB prototype already presented by Toshiba). It has RSX video chip - very strong one. It has a full HD support - up to 1080p. It has a great compatibility with Smart Home concept - you can establish LAN connection with your PC and you'll have a very powerful media structure. You can install Linux on PS3, hook it up to HD tv, plug in mouse and keyboard - use it as a very powerful Linux based PC. It uses technology from AGEIA company - physics of the game carefully calculated, which will let the game have real physics in the game (or totally NOT real :-) It doesn't overheat or scratch discs like 360 does (look at Xbox section of Yahoo answers - it's full of complaints!) You can help to sick people by running Folding Home project (helping Stanford University with their protein molecules research). Home project comes out soon (something like Second Life - virtual 3D online world, where you'll ahve your own place, you can play minigames, talk to other members, etc). Unlike Second Life, it'll be totally free. It's joystick has a funny thing in it - you move it - game responds to your movement (something like Wii's nunchuk joustick).
I hope, that this answers your question. PS3 is really good.

- ps3 has a built-in blu-ray player
-ps3 supports 1.3 HDMI which has rich colors and xbox supports 1.2 HDMI
- ps3 has much more and better exclusives, most of them cant go to xbox 360 because it cant handle that many data(DVD- 8.5gb, blu-ray 50gb)
- because of the blu-ray's huge space, ps3 will have WAY better graphics than 360
- online is free for ps3 not like 360
- ps3 will have over 300 games released by this spring
- you can browse the internet on ps3, no such thing for xbox 360
- when developers get used to the system, the graphics will be WAY better than 360. should take them a year to get used to it
- playstation home is coming out this spring, its a virtual community where you can hang out with friends and customize your own apartment which xbox doesnt have(FREE)
- ps3 is a true HD console. xbox 360 upscale games to 1080p and ps3 DISPLAY games up to 1080p
- built in Wi-Fi
- xbox 360: 33% hardware failure
ps3: .2% hardware failure(see the decimal? less than 1%!)
- ps3 has better back-comp except the 40gb
- rumble returns in spring 2008
- you can upgrade your harddrive without voiding warranties with any 2.5 HDD, which xbox cant because you have to buy a xbox HDD
(they actually have the step by step on how to upgrade it on playstation.com)
those are the ones that i know right off my mind but there are much more reason than this
Prices as of today:
ps3- 80gb: $499 with motorstorm
40gb: $399 with spiderman 3 blu-ray
xbox 360(premium)- $399
(elite)- $479
if you want the accessories that ps3 comes with, that would add up to over 700 dollars, so that means ps3 is actually cheaper

ok shut that guy up he doesnt know a thing xbox is complete bullsh*t!!!
Sony has ruled the console landscape with its previous PlayStation home consoles, and the company is hoping that it has another blockbuster on tap. The PlayStation 3 is a graphical powerhouse, with a cutting-edge Cell processor and a customized Nvidia graphics chip that could melt most gaming PCs. But the console goes beyond gaming, doubling as a Blu-ray and DVD movie player. It's facing some tough competition with the cheaper but less powerful Xbox 360 and the more innovative--and far less expensive--Nintendo Wii.
XBOX SUCKS SAME WITH WII F*CK U GUYS PS3 IS THE BEST!!!!!

ok ps3 is a superior gaming system because it has better graphics then 360. yes 360 has larger library of games but thats because it had a years head start. this month there is 9 really good games coming from it. and how is 360 online better? it really isnt. and 360 cost money to play online. ps3 is free. and come december there is a huge price drop on ps3 down to 400 dollars canadian. witch is pretty good.

The PS3 has the most powerful processor (the Cell), it comes with a Blu-Ray disk player and is already a very good media center. There are a lot of games coming out for it soon; the developers took a while to learn the programing for it.
It is awesome and getting better.
