I have a friend who has been offered $500 a month to get married to a woman from Brazil.
I guess the deal is he has to be married to her for three years and will be paid $500 a month through that time.
I have heard of this being done before. How does this work and why?
I would like to know what this must entail.

I'm not sure how it works, but it sounds like a very bad, and possibly illegal deal.

He will be throwing away 3 years of his life just to make $500 a month? Doesn't seem worth it to me.

The military pay is just like any other job it provides you with a paycheck. Depending on rank you get a BAH or housing on post if you have a family. your housing allowance is meant to put a decent roof over your family's head. the military pay chart is based partly on civilian pay, so if you are at the time of your career where you need both spouses to work to support a family than thats about what you are going to make in the military as well. If the person if brand new than you will be the same as the bottom of the totem pole of making the money. I keep telling my soldiers about this all the time when they go in debt, sir, I am the only person that makes the money to support my wife and two kids, and that person is 21 or something like that. What job out there for your skill level will support a 4 person family when you are 21? Exactly, I make pretty darn good pay for a single person but I have a friend and co-worker who is struggling because his wife cant find a decent job, and he is working for two people.

Well, this is most likely because they want the Brazilian woman to become an American citizen. After the 9/11 laws everything has changed for immigration. It is extremely hard to get into the country. The process that your friend got offered is completely illegal though. The reason for three years is because it takes up to 2 years to finalize her papers once they are married, and you cannot get divorced right away because that would look too suspicious. Not only would he be married to her, but he would have to sit through a couple of meetings in Brazil and talk to the embassy there and a lot of meetings here in America.

People do that all the time in South-East Asia. Their family there paid the men/women in the USA to married their son/daughter. They usually paid up front - CASH! I know a guy who married a woman from Thailand for the money. He was paid $30,000 just to married her. After the three years they would divorce and she will have the right to live in the USA. Good luck! If it work out - let us know. Lots of people do just for the money. And who knows .. you probably end up having a real marriage.

It's called violation of several federal immigration laws, and your friend can spend time in Federal prison. You can not marry someone just so they can get a greencard.

Be sure to check the legality of all this. There may be nuances to this situation that I don't understand, which would make it legal. Last I heard, this type of thing is strictly illegal. Your friend could end up doing jail time for this kind of an arrangement. Be sure to check carefully about all this.

I've never heard of that and I wouldn't do it...ever. It doesn't sound legal either. Why marry for money instead of love?

He gets paid so she can become a citizen. It's also illegal.

$500 a month? You've got to be kidding me. That's chump change. Tell your friend to hold out for more dough.
