Auto mechanics, it pays decent money. My mechanic is a woman and nobody understands my Jeep better than her.

I agree with Double--I'm currently a painter and make great money--I do houses, but I am also a scenic artist--I can do faux work, murals, stenciling, etc--I work for prophouses and studios mostly, but get plenty of high-end residential work. I don't just roll either--I have my own airless spray rig and can shoot, plus some other cool equipment for special projects. It's a fun job and I get to stay active and creative.

Pays to be versatile.

When I was younger, I worked for UPS as a package handler at night to put myself through college (with their help through tuition reimbursement)--then later as a daytime package driver for a year or two while I got production experience in TV and film gigs at night. Pay was awesome--I reached about $30 per hour with lots of overtime, stock options, and free benefits through the Teamsters Union. I actully earned a pension through them, too, before I left.

A warning, though, if you decide on a construction trade--hope you have thick skin--it's a rough crowd out there and you'd better damn well be better at your chosen trade than a man or you'll have a hard time getting work. It's an all-boy's club. Cultivate the quick comeback and stand your ground.

Good luck.

I'm gonna have to say that being a painter is the most common skilled trade I've seen females in. I'm not talking painting pictures, I'm talking walls and buildings. There is quite a skill to doing the job well really, yet requires much less physical labor that the other trades.

Women can work in the construction industry just as men do, if the woman has the ambition to do so. I see women working for the city where they direct traffic around a work site - from what I've heard, they make good money.
