The 22 mag has been much maligned. I was over-joyed with the performance of mine I bought about ten years ago. Then came the hmr. The hmr is better. It shouldn't be but it is.

I have never had a need for either. If a .22 lr won't do it, a .223 will and it costs less to hand load .223 than the cost of .17 HMR or .22 Mag ammo. A .223 has at least 4 times as much energy as either one.

Faster is a relative term and it only applies if you make a solid clean hit. "Flatter" is the key here and the 17HMR is a much flatter shooting bullet than the 22 WMR. The 17HMR is a smaller lighter bullet so it is faster velocity wise and drops less over extended distances, better than the heavier 22 FMJ (Full Metal Jacketed)WMR.
I use the 17HMR myself on Coyotes, Fox, Ground Squirrels and Gophers with incredible results at 150 yards.

22 mag, all the way. The 17 is ok but expensive to shoot.
125 yds is a little long for fox with either, i'd suggest a 223.

Either round is alright for muskrats, fox may be a little dicey. 22WMR is a little better "all purpose" caliber. (I loved it for turkey until they made rimfires illegal.) If you haven't already done so, check out the CCI 22WMR with the V-Max Bullet. It's listed under "Varmint" on the page linked below.

.17 HMR will reach out a little bit farther than .22 magnum because it has a flatter trajectory, and being faster, the .17 HMR will have a little more devastation on impact.
