I have gotten some emails saying that this is a way to make sure an unmarked police car is a real police officer.

Yes and no.

Dialing #77 or *77 on your cell phone will call the highway patrol, but only if you happen to be in an area that supports that feature. Not all state police dispatchers can be called with #77 (or *77).

If you are ever in doubt, dial 911.

I hadn't heard that but I have been retired for 9 years........so anything is possible. Your cell phone provider could answer that question better or contact your local Law Enforcement Agency and ask them. Your best bet (if you are being stopped and concerned about the legitimacy of the car/Officer) is to call 911 from your cell to find out if the Officer stopping you is a real cop.....but there are so many jurisdictions around, especially in larger areas/Cities that you may or may not be in contact with the correct one to find out that info.
