I can understand your sensitivity. The guy sounds like he might be assuming alot. But try to see it this way: Maybe he was attempting to get to know you. If the guy doesn't work there and goes to the gym at the same hours, he might think you two share a common interest.

All I am saying is next time he says that or maybe the next time you see him, kind of ask..."why did you ask me if I worked...?" He might not realize he was being as assuming putz. Then go into it...say, "Yeah, I am a musician, and this is the only good time to go..." The guy could just be a nosy ***, but he could also have some interest and you might get a friend.

He was just making small talk, I think. The fact that you took such offense to it, says that maybe you are insecure about your work hours and feel that it's inadequate to a normal person's working schedule...

People aren't mind readers, he doesn't know what kind of work you do. I'm not sure how he said it, did he ask? Is "you don't work"?, supposed to be "You don't work?". If I saw a person at the gym at odd hours of the day, I would assume they either don't work, or have a schedule that is not normal.

I think he was just trying to make small talk and get a conversation going. You could have simply replied by letting him know that you do work.

I used to get the same reaction.
I used to work continental shifts, 12 hour nightshifts was one and, I would go home, sunbathe for an hour or so and eventually some nosey neighbour would say: "No work today then?"
I would reply that I`d already put in a 12 hour nightshift while they were sleeping, and why were they not at work?"
You could lose friends that way, I did!

Maybe he is too stupid to realize that not everyone works a 9-5 mon-fri job. I work graveyard shift, so when people see me out during the day with my 3 year-old they assume I am a stay-at-home mom and can do things for them at a moments notice.

Just ignore him.

There are plenty of other things to worry about instead of being pissed that some stranger picked on you.

I would just laugh and ignore him. He doesn't know your work hours.

Heck, this week I'm Midnight to 8am, so you could have worked and then went there to work out.

OR, you could be a 4pm-midnight person, and work out in the mornings.

Lighten up. The guy could have said it more tactfully, but I doubt if he intended to be offensive. He was just noticing that, unlike most gym rats, you don't have a regular work-out time. Don't go taking offence where no offence is intended. You could have just laughed and said "I wish."

If he is always there--then why isnt he at work!!?
But if he does work there--then he was a stupid idiot to insult a customer! What a jerk!

Some people just have zero class. Just ignore him, and walk away from that a-hole when you see him coming.
