Not filing unemployment may make you hungry if you're out of work. It is your right to collect it if you have been fired or laid off and there is no cause such as theft, insubordination, etc.

What record?? I don't see how filing for unemployment could hurt anything.

If you mean credit record, no it will not hurt it. Remember that in the U.S. employment benefits are taxable income.
