I would say it would depend on their maturity. If they're not very mature, I wouldn't let them go with friends until 13. If they are mature I would let them go with friends at 11 or 12.

For us, in VA, kids over 13 are not supposed to trick-or-treat. And, frankly, most 13 year olds I know don't have the decision making skills in an emergency to be safe on their own.
We always had a supervisor of SOME sort.
And, frankly, I think our family actually found the perfect middle ground here.
When we were younger, it was my parents who took us.
When my older sister was too old to trick-or-treat, she'd go with my friends and I as a chaparone. She wasn't nearly as intimidating as a 'parent' hovering over you. But she was completely able to take care of us in an emergeny.
When *I* became too old to go trick-or-treating, by then it was MY job to take the little neigbors' children and then my niece and nephew.
Its the perfect job for someone who LOVES Halloween and doesn't want to sit in and give out candy- instead take those kids. They'll listen as an authority figure, but they won't feel "uncool" by having mom follow them!!
Frankly, I wouldn't let my 13 niece year old go alone. Not b/c I don't trust HER- but I don't trust others. So I'd make sure a neighbor or family friend who was 'kid approved' but responsible went with my neice and her friends. :)

I think that kids need to be supervised up until they reach their teens...but I still say 13-14 still needs the watchful eyes. I think the best thing to do is to take them to safe havens where they do the trick or treating things for free and you know that the candy and treats will be safe to eat once you get home.

I was allowed to go out with my friend at age 11, but that was back when the world was not quite as crazy. Still, if it is 3 or more kids I think 11-12 is ok.

I used to let mine go when they were about 10-11 but I'd wait at the end of the street. They usually would go with other kids in a small group. They seemed to like the independence and they knew that I wasn't that far away if they needed me. When we got home, they dumped the candy out and we looked for open packages and tossed them in the trash. (Then I took all of their chocolate for my mental stability...JUST KIDDING!)

I was the "supervisor" for my brother (9) and my cousin (7) when I was 11. I think that was the first year we went out without an adult. I was actually a babysitter by that time and we all knew we had to stay together and look out for cars, so there was no problem.

Depending whether you live in a city, small town or the country and where your child would be, as well as whether you live in a safe area, would both affect my answer.
But I grew up in a very safe, and very small town, and I believe that when I was in grade 4 or 5, I went with my friends alone for hte first time. It also depends on the maturity of your child.

I would have to say in between the ages of 13-15, it depends on how mature the child is.

For me , NEVER!!! There's must be always an adult near them just in case!!!
My kids have 14, 12 and 10. I also have nephews and we the adults take turns inside the car on the street where they are trick or treating. That's the safest way!
